Valparaíso is taking a leading role in modernizing public transportation by introducing contactless open-loop payment options across its transit network, including electric buses, trolleybuses, elevators, and the Limache-Puerto train. This innovation allows passengers to pay seamlessly using credit, debit, and prepaid cards, as well as QR codes, transforming the travel experience for commuters.
The project, a collaboration between the national railways company EFE (Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado), Mastercard, SONDA, and Switchio by Monet+, marks Valparaíso as the first city in Chile and the Southern Cone to implement this technology across four different transit systems. Switchio played a pivotal role in integrating these advanced payment methods, supporting seamless implementation and delivering its expertise in collaboration with SONDA and Jorge Lillo Oyarzun.
Among the many benefits, passengers enjoy:
- Faster boarding, enhancing overall transit efficiency
- Increased safety by minimizing cash handling
- Inclusion and accessibility, thanks to diverse payment options
- Sustainability through reduced cash use and plastic waste
Additionally, fare integration discounts offer savings when combining transportation modes, such as $90 CLP with the train + electric bus or $210 CLP with the train + trolleybus.
Expansion to Biobío Region
And we’re just getting started. Building on this success, our partnership has now expanded the contactless payment solution into the Biobío Region, enabling EMV payments at 26 Biotrén stations across 8 cities. With 244 new terminals in operation, more people than ever can experience the ease of seamless payments in public transport.
Eduardo Vejarano, Account Manager for Switchio’s Latin America projects, commented:
“This project is a testament to the dedication and innovation of the entire team. Our collaboration with EFE, Mastercard, and SONDA has helped position Chile as a leader in transit technology in Latin America. By bringing convenient, secure, and integrated payment solutions to Valparaíso and Biobío, we’re helping redefine public transportation in the region. This is only the beginning—our vision is to expand these solutions across Chile and beyond.”

This milestone reflects Switchio’s broader goal of rolling out EMV payments across all of Chile, making travel more convenient, secure, and accessible for all.
Valparaíso and Biobío Region are leading the way, demonstrating Chile’s commitment to transit innovation and passenger-centered solutions.
