Metro Passengers in Panama City can now use contactless fare payments

Panama & Switchio

Passengers on both lines of the metro system in Panama City, Panama, are seeing firsthand the benefits of modernization in public transit. Known as account-based ticketing, the innovative solution greatly increases passenger convenience by streamlining the fare payment process while eliminating the need for conventional paper tickets

Contactless technology means progress and savings

Panama City, Panama, has introduced a modern ticketing model in its metro system that allows passengers to use their bankcards to pay their fares.

Now passengers and tourists can travel on the metro without having to worry about buying a paper ticket first. To ride, all they need is a bankcard or digital wallet (smartwatch, smartphone). Passengers can either use the Metro or Mi Bus cards, or switch to contactless payments.

Account-based ticketing is the future of public transit

Key trends in public transit focus on reaching out to potential passengers and providing them with incentives to use public transit.

Account-based ticketing allows passengers to use their contactless bankcard or a smart device as a ticket. Another advantage is that the platform automatically optimizes fares and always recommends the best one for passengers based on their previous journeys.

We’re very proud to be one of the partners participating in the project for Metro de Panamá, S.A. It has been a pleasure to work with Sonda, Visa, Mastercard, and Mikroelektronika. Together, we’re bringing Panama Metro passengers an accessible, fast, secure, convenient, and innovative contactless payment experience.
